man, i love this book. for a variety of reasons it's been a comfort read for me for years (yes, this gruesome murder mystery, what about it). i really like the weird, complex, steampunk-but-make-it-fantasy vibe of the worldbuilding, i enjoy the mystery, i even like the political intrigue and the ways in which it intersects with other subplots of the book, and, god, i love the two deeply, deeply flawed main characters who slowly come to respect and care for one another. There's Olivia, who's an eccentric, brash murder investigator, and there's Chris, who's quiet, anxious, and cares all too much for social etiquette and manners to the point of being overly judgmental over completely inconsequential things. They're polar opposites and both kind of jerks in different ways but they're so human and AHHH their unlikely but slowly building companionship makes me cry 😠I dunno, it's just really nice reading a book where the heart of the story is the relationship between a man and a woman, but it's also entirely platonic. Also, I've reread this book at least 5 times, but i have bad memory and there's so many interwoven plots happening and plot twists at every turn that somehow it still manages to surprise me on rereads. it's fun.
