the first third is all nothing, then a weak ghost story, and then a weak murder/mystery story.

I listened to this on audio, and found it a delightful listen! The narrator was Devin Jones for me. It was a coming of age story for Dev, the summer he was 21, with a twist of King's classic paranormal. I thought the descriptions were delightful, I could smell the cotton candy at Joyland, and imagine that thrilling horror house. Joyland is like the carnival of my youth. i truly enjoyed this read, beginning to end!

The beginning of the book moved a bit slow, but I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed this book, it wasn't what I initially thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be this creepy haunted amusement park story, but it was so much more than that. 'Joyland' is a coming of age story for our main character Devin Jones, it also deals a lot with grief and helping people. Stephen King really has a way with making you love and feel for his characters and it was no different in 'Joyland'. I really liked all the characters, even the owner of the amusement park which at first I thought was going to be a creepy non trustable old guy, but I was wrong. Just how I was wrong about a few of the other characters. The ending blew me away with that unexpected twist, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it!

This almost felt like two books to me. The first 100 pages or so are not his best work -- felt focused on getting to the plot points and checking them off the to-do list. The second half, though, more than makes up for it. By the end, I was wanting more of these characters and their lives. Definitely worth a read.
