this was an odd read. look, i love jo nesbø - i had a chance to meet him once and he's smart and funny and a generally delightful fellow (and he had the best shoes, ha). i love his 'harry hole' series - i find them engaging and enjoy how the character of harry is developing over the series. but i am not having the same luck or engagement with the novels nesbø is writing apart from the harry books, and i am not sure why. while blood on snow had moments i appreciated, overall i was just left feeling 'meh' about it. so.... bummer. on the upside, it's a very quick read and i zipped through it in one evening. and i do like visiting nesbø's norway - he is good at bringing his settings to life in all their dark glory.

It's interesting to me that this book was apparently written under a pseudonym. The copy I have is a very advanced reading copy - not even a real cover - and it clearly states Jo Nesbo is the author. When I picked it up, I also didn't realize it was a standalone novel, and not part of the Harry Hole series.

This was the first non-Harry Nesbo book that I've read. I think I'd call it more of a novella - it was only 200 pages, and went very quickly. I can't say that I loved it, but I didn't hate it, either. The topic was quite morbid, but I found myself oddly drawn to the main character. The ending made me sad -- but really, how else can a book like this end?

Overall, not a bad read. Don't think I'd have paid for this, but it was fine for a freebie. I'll share with other Nesbo fans.

To be in the head of a person who does not have any problem to kill and still see how empathetic they are, for me, is a presentation of problematic thinking in our society that people can be only good and bad. We learned from this character that people cannot be divided into these categories.

This whole thing just felt really lazy to me. Like the structure and the bones of the story were good, but nothing was fleshed out. All the characters except one were cardboard cut outs whose only motivations were to propel the plot forward. Overall I found the whole thing underwhelming and rushed. Maybe something got lost in the translation to English and reading it in its original language would have made the experience more palatable, but whatever the case in its current iteration it simply did not work for me.

Kort, men bra skrevet med mye informasjon og en handling som var grei å følge. 😊

Langt fra hans beste, men spennende nok.

Hitman with a heart of gold falls for his target. Unfortunately, it is completely, painfully, boringly obvious from the moment he does how things will play out. Kept reading hoping to be proven wrong, and that all the many, many unsubtle hints the author was piling on were red herrings, but nope.
