Blood on Snow

Jo Nesbø

Recenze 2023

A stand-alone book (ie. not a Harry Hole mystery) that proves that Nesbo can step outside his comfort zone in terms of characters; the tone and feel of this book is still very familiar. Rather than a somewhat conflicted policeman with questionable morals and methods, we have a hitman who is aware of his mental limits, although he's very good at what he does and has definitely overcome the dyslexia he perhaps has. This last month or so in Olav's life - or is it? love the uncertainty at the end - is wonderfully detailed, with a nice blend of violence and love blended with a solid moral code.

If this is the only time I meet Olav, fine. But perhaps? Please, Mr. Nesbo...

Lots of twists, kept changing what I thought was going to happen...have to read the second one to know the ending...

If you could see my bookshelves (real bookshelf), Jo Nesbo is the first name you'd read. When I was on thriller binge, like two years ago, I heard about Nesbo and bought bunch of his books, all pretty lengthy, his name written with big fonts on the spine of the book. I've five books of him, but unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever read any of them. When i read Redbreast i thought it was pretty amazing even though I'd skimmed last few pages- I rated it four stars here because I thought I'd missed something and I'm the one to blame. I tried this novella, which is not a Harry Hole book, just to try out if there's a tiny hope that i can get into Nesbo, looks like that gate's closed.
Talking about this book, this is the sort of book I'm supposed to like. Dark, gritty, short length, short chapters, philosophical, character study, melancholic, written by middle aged man, and Nordic. But the hackneyed translation, or real bad writing, I can't say which for sure - spoiled it all. If you're looking for a Japanese version of something like this, you should try out Fuminori Nakamura.

Cool start of a serie!

Also this book matched the snowy weather outside which is a bliss.
