Narrated by Patti Smith - Nesbo tells us the story of Olav - who works as a “fixer” for one of two crime bosses in Oslo. Olav is a many faceted and compassionate man. Olav kills a man hired by the other crime boss to kill his boss - and then gives the widow the money he was paid for the job. He tells us of a deaf/mute girl that he saves from prostitution by paying off her boyfriend’s heroin debt. He spends months following the girl from her job in a grocery store to her home - to make sure that the heroin boyfriend won’t come back to hurt her - his infatuation with her builds.
He is asked to kill his boss’ wife because she has taken a lover. He kills the lover instead - and then learns that he has killed his boss’ son. He breaks into the house - and convinces the wife to leave with him before someone else is sent to kill her. Katrina and Olav live at his apartment while figuring out their next steps. An attempt is made on Olav’s life - that ends with him causing a fight on the subway - and escaping without killing anyone.
With all the death and shooting that goes on - including Olav killing his former boss when he comes to the church to view his son’s coffin - Olav comes across as sensitive.
In the end - Olaf’s caring leads to his death. And Maria - the girl at the shop - learns of his love for her.

Nothing is ever as it seems with Nesbø. It's brilliant. Another fantastic story from him and I'm already ready for more.
This book is different from his others; obviously the Harry Hole series is its own animal, but Headhunters and The Son are also both complex thrillers on multiple levels. Blood on Snow is still very Nesbø--it has that sort of unbelievable humor as well as a few good twists and turns--but it is also, in its way, just a short "fun" novel. Something to read in one night and enjoy. A bit less gripping and/or consuming than his other 12, but I'm certainly not complaining. Like I said, its still Nesbø.
I thought Neil Smith did a good job with the translation. Don Bartlett is my favorite for Nesbø, but I thought Neil had a good tone that went well with the tone and style of this particular book.

Blood on Snow
Classic, hard-boiled crime novella with a remarkably likable assassin as the main character. In keeping with the genre, there's some predictable plot points, but it still feels fresh overall and kept my interest all the way through. Great ending...

This book was a little grimey for me personally but it was good. The main characters got depth that I didn't expect and it made for a fun mobster vibe comedy of errors. . . Sans the comedy. A drama of errors.
