Blood on Snow

Jo Nesbø

This is a short novel which doesn't feature Harry Hole, the protagonist in most of Nesbo's work. Those aren't necessarily negatives though - sometimes it's good to read a short, less complex novel with unfamiliar characters and an unfamiliar setting.
I liked this - the characters are more classically 'noir' and exist on the wrong side of the law, but they are interesting and well expressed.
Personally, I hope this is the beginning of a new series.
dark mysterious fast-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Noir novel that ends up having an unexpected unsavory ending. I was enjoying this, but was never really blown away or impressed by it at any point. There are a few bright spots that I definitely appreciated but overall no thanks. Only getting 2/5 and I’m gonna need a bangerang book suggestion to get me to read another Scandinavian novel. The ones I’ve read previously were not my thing at all!

This has a different feel to other Nesbo books, but every bit as clever and engaging.

Adding a favorite passage:

And there wasn’t a single logical reason in the world why that shouldn’t happen right then. But it still felt as if there was a right moment, one particular second squeezed in between all the other seconds. … Like in a book, when an author decides precisely when something will happen, something you know is going to happen, because the author has already said it’s going to happen, but it hasn’t happened yet. Because there’s a proper place in a story, so you have to wait a bit, so that things can happen in the right order. I closed my eyes and felt the clock count down, a spring tensing, a drop still clinging to the point of an icicle.
And then the moment arrived.

Felt this latest novel or novella by jo nesbo is like a filler where it's easy to read but still finding itself wanting as the characters are skimmed over and not the detail used to in his previous work either the son or the Harry hole series. Just hope if this is going to be a new series that it has more flesh to the storylines

Masterfully written.

Everything about this novel just seemed so unnecessary...

This was my first introduction to Jo Nesbo and probably my first real crime noir reading experience. I'm not sure what my expectations were heading into this book, but I was surprised by the humor Nesbo was able to incorporate into an otherwise violent, dark book.

I don't think it would be possible to enjoy this book if the reader went into it expecting major psychological twists and anything but a surface-level plot, but that doesn't mean Blood on Snow can't be a fun read. The story was fast-paced and exactly what I would expect from noir - violence, a dark landscape, a femme fatale, and a tragic hero. In a lot of ways, Blood on Snow reminded me of all the things I love about the Kill Bill movies which means I will definitely be continuing on with the next book, Midnight Sun.

Meh. Didn't hate it, but almost. Didn't like the characters, the story was ok. Didn't care for the jumping around between present and stuff he'd done in the past. Would have been ok in a longer book, but for such a short book it just made the main part of the story not be much of the book. MCs were unlikable and there was stupid insta-love.
