Que de souvenirs de replonger dans cette saga que j’ai dévorée adolescente ! Et j’y trouve un sens féministe aujourd’hui : se battre pour sa place dans le monde, et refuser les injonctions.

Loved the world building and the main character's inner journey but the book as a whole didn't completely satisfy me. Might be an issue with the translation.

This was so good! I just blazed through it and I'm already in book 2. It's making me want to watch the anime again since it's been so long since I watched it. They don't make enough YA/teen books like this in the western world, that's for sure.

It's heartbreaking watching Youko forcibly grow up. Unlike in the anime, with the book you really get inside her head. She goes through so much. The chapters seem short and yet a lot happens at the same time. The worldbuilding is amazing, aspirational.

I'm so excited to get further in.

A great book based on the anime series Twelve Kingdoms (or the series was based on the book, I am not sure which to be honest).

This story focuses on a young girl named Yoko. A standard Japanese girl who works hard to fit in with others. One day a man appears before her, along with Fantastical beasts. She is whisked away to a different world by this man called Keiki. Before she is whisked away she is told it is for her ow safety and those around her and that she can always be returned home later. However, upon arriving in this new world she is alone and persecuted by the locals.

This book follows her journey, which is one that is hard and full of mistrust in others. She wanders the land searching for a way home and learning of this new world and why she was brought here. This book has some differences from the anime (such as in the anime 2 classmates were brought along) but the story is well written, and a good pace filled with information. I loved how different class of people had original titles and laws that governed them. I hope to be able to find and read the second book in the series.

This is a really fun book- an early isekai that still manages to be original to someone who isn't too familiar with the genre outside of pop culture.
While the set up is cliche (and continues to be so in some areas) it is much closer to being about Youko growing independently as a person- no big casts or romances here.
The worldbuilding is based off chinese mythology, so if you're familiar with it at all its very neat to see!  The combat is also done well, the author Ono manages to have a strong character without losing any stakes; she also doesn't hold back on graphic details.

I've been told the tokyopop translation itself is a bit of a mix- some lines are removed and the wording can get weird. If you have the option to read the original japanese or another translation it might be looking into.
