Interesting middle entry to the trilogy. We're still following Catherine in the late 1600s, but now the Cataluna has new owners in 1995. We also finally find out how Catherine's ghost possesses the car, though it doesn't make a lot of sense. I appreciate what Stine was trying to do with the time travel and all, but the execution is lacking. Still, it's an enjoyable and fast read if you don't think too hard about it.

Fear Street # 52

'The Cataluna Chronicles' is about a murderous haunted car that is killing teens left and right with little or no provocation. We have a consistent storyline throughout the trilogy following young Catherine Hatchett and William Parker in 1698 New England, but the "present-day" story in 1995 Shadyside follows different teens every time with little reference to each other. Little reference, that is, except for the increasingly grim reputation our Doom Car receives and yet is still bought by parents for their children.

The Cataluna's latest owners are sisters Lauren and Regina Patterson. They're related only by marriage, but they've grown close since their parents married. The Cataluna is theirs to share, but Lauren is worried by how different Regina is when driving the car. She's more aggressive and reckless. Soon, there are stories of a hit-and-run driver throughout Shadyisde - could Regina be responsible? The dynamic between Lauren and Regina is more interesting then Bryan's story from volume one, but only slightly. We're not given enough to work with because we're constantly going back to the 1690s and Stine really wants me to care about William's revenge-arc. I'm used to the half-logic of 'Fear Street' books and it still doesn't make sense that William is our hero. I'm getting serious 'Fear Street Saga' trilogy vibes from this one and its much worse the second time around. The only thing I'm enjoying is the many ways this sexy car is finding of killing most of the teens who come into contact with it.

Fear Street in Publication Order

Next #53: 'Who's Been Sleeping in My Grave', Ghosts of Fear Street #2

Previous #51: 'The Evil Moon', Cataluna Chronicles #1

Much like the first in the series, one of my favorite books of all time. Its been a while since Ive read it, almost 13 years, I still remember it, and its worth all 5 stars.

This must be one of those trilogies that get more cheesy with every book.

Not as good as I remember. More like a bunch of short stories that would have been more interesting if they'd been fleshed out.
