It's been over a month since I read a novel, and this was an interesting return. I don't have much to say about it beyond the fact that it's incredibly well-written, obviously, and as I was reading I kept envisioning a film adaptation.

K tomu prispiva i velka frekvence nabozenskych a stavitelskych terminu.
Book club selection. I hated it when I first started reading it. But the longer I read, the more I was drawn in. A difficult book, but, I think, quite an accurate description of madness/obsession/sin. I'm still thinking about it days later. I think that means it was a better book than I initially thought.
Probably 3.5. (The audiobook performance was 5 stars––read by Benedict Cumberbatch, of course. He's amazing.)

What I liked most about this novel is the setting. I had the opportunity to visit Salisbury in 2016, and I took the tower tour of the cathedral. It was a highlight of my trip, and I loved being reminded and prompted to look back a photos I had taken. What I didn’t particularly enjoy in the novel was the stream of consciousness writing. I’ve never really been a fan, and I found it disorienting here. I appreciate the nuance and intention of the prose, but it is not for me. I think I would enjoy a more thorough discussion about the book, but as a casual read it was just okay.

Read this in college and then a few times since, although I totally forgot about it until Steve added it to his shelf. I remember really liking it and being wowed by Golding's language, but it's very dense in places, to the point where I wasn't 100% sure what exactly was happening. But the central idea, about a man so consumed with the idea of doing something for the glory of god, that it maybe takes him all the way back around in the other direction, is great and 100% up my alley.
