This was a solid sequel, it started off slow so I thought it was going to be a 3 star but then for the last 100 pages I couldn’t stop reading and the ending was good so 4 stars it is.

I like Nikolai. I don't much like Alina. I don't like the Darkling at all, and all his "unhappy childhood", BS, doesn't justify anything. Millions of people have unhappy childhood without becoming psychopaths. I like Mal.
And I kind of like these books. Still reading, huh :-D

Similarly to my feelings about Shadow and Bone, I found that Siege and Storm fell a little flat. Still a pretty engaging plot, but I feel like there's a lot more emphasis on Alina's romantic relationships than I'd like. Far from a bad book :)

As per usual, the author plays with my feelings and expectations in a rollercoaster of emotions and action-packed scenes. I liked it a lot even though there are some things I'd change and certain moments where I'd slap some characters... I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out in the third and final book. Highly recommend it.

The final battle gets a whole half star on its own. I appreciate the banter between the characters, and Nikolai is mostly to thank for that. He is an entertaining character.

I really like that Bardugo makes all the characters capable in their own way. They all have their role to play in the story, and I think they stand out from each other. I'm also fond of Alina, which I'm happily surprised over. Female MC's have had a tendency to drive me mad in the past, but Alina is the right kind of mix between strong and weak, funny and serious. Not too dumb or naive either, while Bardugo isn't exaggerating her power or strengths. Other fantasy books should note down, this is how you write a female character with the chosen one's trope.
