Jack is a broody ex-Navy SEAL. Poppy is your typical good girl/girl next door. She protected him when they were younger, so he vows to keep her safe from everyone as they grow up. Jack not a good guy, but will do anything to protect Poppy. Poppy and Jack have been “friends” from afar, but now that she is grown, Jack no longer wants to keep his distance.

I was quite disappointed with Play Dirty. This is the first book in a new series, but I’ve read many a books by Lora Leigh. I did not quite buy the romance/chemistry between Jack and Poppy. It just felt really forced, and Jack came off kind of creepy to me. I also found the AI plot line a little strange especially what was said in the epilogue.

I got an ARC copy of the digital book and the audiobook. I’m not picky about narrators. However, I could have done without her changing her voice for the male characters. Also the “southern” accent was cheesy as hell. 😬🫣

Thank you to Netgalley and Publishers for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This small town, friends to lovers, suspenseful, good girl/bad boy, dark romance was a delight to listen to. The audiobook was narrated by Brianna Bronte. She did an amazing job with character portrayal.

This story was full of action, emotion, suspense, and steam. Can't forget the steam. This fast paced romance left no stone unturned when it comes to Poppy and Jack's love story. This was far from the typical dark romance I've read. Lora Leigh did a great job with storyline.

This book does leave us hanging on with the epiloge alluding to a next book. Readers beware. But it also gives us more to look forward to.

Thank you to Lora Leigh, Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the chance to listen to this book in return for an honest review.

Starting this bad boy today. I cannot wait for some steamy ex Navy Seal hotness.

The plot of this book for sure was a little much for me. Jack was for sure morally grey and the Poppy is for sure flawed. They both had rough childhoods and each other has been their only constant. It was spicy and dark and almost everything I'd have wanted from a story. She saved his life and he saved hers. They feel indebted to each other, they need each other, and they know they're going to get hurt.

It was entertaining, the story was gripping at times, there was just something about it that didn't click for me. I'm not sure if it was the relationship between Jack and Poppy that just never really sat right for me (he loved her when they were kids and she for sure had a crush and one fateful night ended what could've been between them, yet outside of sex there really wasn't any kind of connection for me), or maybe it was the weird AI element that brought Jack back to town in the first place. He's military, but it really seemed like he should've been CIA/Homeland Security/Mercenary instead as the story didn't seem like a military-type plot.

Jack is for sure the Alpha, over protective very morally grey character that I'm sure is going to be a big hit. Poppy seemed a little too whiny for my taste and seemed to have multiple personalities which made it hard to connect with her.

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillian Audio for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I cringed when the author used "vagina," but she lost me at, "She felt her womb pulse." Pass.
