The book was honestly a good read. I throughly enjoyed it and the characters!
This was a fun story, but not much more than that. The characters were all pretty one-dimensional and static, and the plot moved along based on events that felt contrived. Characters explained literally everything they did, which not only felt forced but also left nothing for the reader to wonder about or figure out for themselves. I also really disliked the "romance" in the book between Yumeko and Tatsumi, which I put in quotes because two people being weirdly hyperaware of each other is not a romance. They began to trust each other, but always with the qualifier that they didn't know why they were doing so, they were puzzled by their feelings, they couldn't explain why they wanted to protect each other. And to me, that's largely because there was no character development or interaction that remotely introduces the possibility of a romance. In this case, and with almost all other plot points and events, things seemed to happen just because that's what the author needed to happen for the story to unfold.

The Japanese mythology setting had a lot of promise, but this was just boring. I had three problems with it:
1) plot? what plot? This book seems to go much the same way as me playing RPGs - get through the opening sequence, then get distracted and spend the next 100 hours ignoring the main story in favour of doing side quests
2) Yumeko is painfully naive and clueless about everything. I get that she's young, but come on, she's supposed to be 16, not 6.
3) I feel robbed. How can you give a character illusion magic and then never have them use it?!

Read this over a longer period with friends in our small book club. The story is simple but really fun, with a setting that feels like all of Japanese mythology tossed into a blender. Paced a bit like an anime (or something like Avatar TLA if you prefer), with little episodic conflicts that all contribute to the main journey. The prose isn't technically amazing, but it does a fantastic job of painting a colorful picture of each scene. Great fight scenes. Looking forward to reading the sequel!
4.5/5
I read some reviews before, a lot of them they said the main character Yumeko is so naive that is annoying and even called her useless. I normally read and love bad ass heroine. So I read this book with that expectation, which i think she isn’t what they said at all, at least in my opinion. She proved herself to be useful and clever. Even though she is naive, it is a good contrast to the other main character.
I did enjoy the book, the only problem is i was lucky enough to get a copy that has blank pages in it. So I decided to buy a copy with another cover to collect and its all good. That how much I like it ♡
The ending tho, im glad that the next sequel is already out!

The book started of really slow and I got really bored.
It also didn't help that the perspectives kept changing and at least my e-book version didn't include whose perspective it was, which was extremely confusing and made the story hard to follow.
I'm still gonna continue with the series, because I got all three books for 5€ in a sale, and because it got really action-packed and exciting towards the ending. I am very excited to see how the story is going to continue and if we will explore Yumeko and her yokai powers a bit more.

2.75;; this book was really dense (with mythology) yet at the same time it felt very empty? there were so many side quests that by the time it came to the main battle (?) i'd mostly lost interest already. the mythology was very comprehensive but it felt almost filler-y if that make sense;; the writing was not objectionable and the characters weren't that annoying (but i felt like they lacked a certain depth? idk) there was just something about it that made it feel draggy. lots of people thoroughly enjoyed this book though so it might just have been not a good match for me :)
