In most romance novels you meet the couple at the beginning of the book and the story is all about them finding their way to each other before the end. In this story there are two different guys the main woman is in love with in her life and up until the very end of the epilogue I was not sure who she was going to have her happily ever after with.

I’m struggling to rate this. It’s out of my comfort zone and had some elements I didn’t care for. At the same time, it was compelling enough to keep me reading and had lots of wit and humor mixed in with the heavy themes. For that reason, I give it 3 stars.

Fans of 2nd chance love, love triangles, and messy and angsty stories told through multiple timelines will want to pick this up! I’m not sure if it truly qualifies as a romance but it had a strong romantic plot.

I didn’t like the rushed feeling of the last few chapters. Some major plot points got stuffed in there and I was like, “Wait, what?” And, I wasn’t really torn between the two love interests because one of them sucks (iykyk). There’s some very cringey messy stuff going on — which is likely a selling point for some readers. I was very on the fence and while I wanted to know what would happen, I also found the pace to be lagging at times. This book felt longer than 330 pages.

God, the main female character annoyed the hell out of me. She’s so immature and avoidant of her feelings (she’s always just running away), that’s it’s painful to see her sabotage herself over and over. If she had had two honest conversations, this book would have been a short story.  Also, my least favorite tropes - miscommunication (or no communication), teenage first love, and love triangle (kinda).

This book was kind of a mess. I really disliked one of the love interests, he didn’t seem genuine or have many redeeming qualities, so the two “maybes” weren’t on even footing. It felt like every single noun in this book was paired with an adjective which quickly grew tiresome, and the third act *redacted* felt forced, repetitive, and then wrapped up too easily.

Alison Rose Greenberg is a brilliant writer. She has the ability to break and rebuild my heart over and over in this book. A book hasn’t made me ugly cry in a while. The characters were so relatable, in real relationships that reflect being 35. Second chances, missed timing, young love, new love, being authentically yourself vs potentially fitting a mold of someone else.
