just sent my best friend 6 5+ min voice notes about this book and I have no idea how to rate it. I love a book filled with pining and angst and I definitely got that here. But what was that ending? And why did the author feel the need to cram SO many plot points into this book? I also didn’t like reading the lyrics which might be a bit mean but they weren’t for me.
I can’t believe Maggie decided on Asher being the one for her forever without a talk about kids. Like the author really threw that breakup between them at us like nothing when there was 0 lead up. If having a kid is SO important to you why would you never mention it? Especially when it’s how the book starts! And then the way they get back together is NOT gratifying imo. I needed him to acknowledge he went to therapy and does want to be a dad. I didn’t get that AT ALL. And that’s too big of a thing to just leave unaddressed.
We really got love triangle, extreme pining, cheating, heartbreak, sexual assault, death of parent, death of sibling, divorce, fertility issues, etc all in this book just for the author to sprinkle in some more and cause another breakup in the end. That’s crazy to me.
With those complaints though, I did find this to be emotional and heartbreaking. I actually teared up when Maggie was ending things with Garrett and a couple times during portions relating to her sexual assault.

If you like contemporary romances, flashbacks, healing from trauma, and growing through failed relationship mishaps, this book is for you! It's a very very sweet and relatable love-in-your-mid-thirties contemporary romance novel.

I'm going to be honest here though. I struggled with the beginning. I didn't like the love interest. I didn't feel invested in the characters. It just fell flat to me. BUT then the flashback timeline shifted, and man was I invested and interested then!! Honestly, by the time I got to the ending (which is fantastic by the way), I didn't even remember why I struggled at the beginning! I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves contemporary romance, but especially those looking for contemporary romance novels featuring main characters in their 30s.

Content Warning: s*xual assault, explicit s*xual scenes (not as long as later Sarah J Maas books, but I skipped through them and can't say much more than that), strong language

this book isn't at all what i expected (and to be fair, i often just pick books up and dive in without knowing anything about the book, so this is just another one of those instances) and i think that works well for it.

it definitely isn't for everyone and i think the ending sort of deflated me, but i think the journey of the book itself saves it.
