Juth and Steph-
I really enjoyed this story! One “trope” I tend to adore the most is found family and this embodied that to perfection. Little Pak and his papa Juth warmed the heart right away and Steph was a great leading lady. The story of not belonging is so easy to related to, and quite honestly it makes me want to smack every single one of the “elders” for treating “not perfect” children like that. The idea of turning your back on a child simple because they didn’t look like how you wanted? Unthinkable!
I enjoyed that this couple, this family, chose each other. While I love resonance pairings, there is something special about a couple deciding (without the khui’s interference) that you are my person. And Juth and Steph were definitely each other’s perfect person.
The part that surprised me was I even became invested in O’jek and Daisy. O’jek, much like I’rec (who can take a short walk off a tall cliff), has never really appealed to me, but we did see glimpses of a thoughtful male in Bridget’s Bane. In this book, we are taken on a full arc- from wanting to smack him upside the head to being so excited by the prospect of him and Juth ((((spoiler alert)))) being a family.
As for Daisy- she showed herself to be more observant than most. I have a tendency to be drawn in by characters that appear one way but have some deep insecurities hidden. I think Daisy has that and I’m looking forward to reading her book- the same can’t be said for Sam. But she’s next so I’ll definitely give it a go.
Now for the one negative I have about this book, and this series, so far: Flor. The characters all talk about how amazing and smart and funny and blah, blah, blah- but she has to be the most immature of the bunch- while also being the oldest of the kidnapped women. Each time we “see” her, I get the impression of a 13 year old clapping her hands in the stands of a game. She never comes across as someone worthy of praise. And in this book, we are supposed to believe that Steph was so taken with her she had an insta- crush?!?! I really side-eye that.
Truly that was the only part of the book I was not on bored with, everything else was wonderful. I’m excited to get in O’jek and Daisy’s heads!

I LOVE Juth. LOVE LOVE LOVE him. I am SO happy he found happiness and community. After a lifetime alone and friendless, seeing him find a new outlook on life brought me so much joy. Steph is an awesome character too. She works so hard to take care of everyone's emotional well-being. The two of them are a FANTASTIC partnership. And little Pak. I just loved this little family.
