I wanted to like this book and there were moments I did enjoy it, but it felt like it rushed through some of the most pivotal moments. I could’ve also lived without some of the spicier scenes. I enjoyed the smaller romantic moments in it. Forehead kisses and bonding over interests, would’ve like more of that and less of the thirsting. I also very much wish I hadn’t read the epilogue at all. Full cliché. A lot of the characters and story beats were really compelling but they just weren’t fleshed out enough.

I really enjoyed the story of finding love where you don’t expect it, friends who are there for you no matter what, toxic people getting their comeuppance, and that while having a team/partner beside you is great you can also do things solo and be okay.

That being said, I found this book to be too sexy? Like there was so much sex it was eventually just background noise. Definitely not an audiobook to listen to with the kids around, but by about half way I could have skipped through the sex scenes and still enjoyed the book.

All sex aside, I loved the communication between all the characters (friendship and romantic relations) and the amount of times Nate and Stas mentioned therapy and how beneficial it was.

Icebreaker was an addicting, fast paced sports romance with incredible chemistry, great banter, and characters who were so easy to be emotionally invested in. Simply put, it was made to be devoured.

Anastasia and Nate are both endearing and charming characters who are just easy to care about and root for- even if that sometimes means rooting against their own wants. Icebreaker isn’t world building or big on immersive description- it’s much more plot and dialogue driven. If that’s not up your alley, don’t pick this up, you will hate it. If this were a fantasy or horror, I would hate that quality, but it made for a fantastic head empty no thoughts read.

There’s one storyline that stands out in an otherwise relatively light story as dark and way more twisted than you would expect: the relationship between Anastasia and Aaron, her skating partner. He consistently gaslights, emotionally abuses, and manipulates her  throughout the entire book. If a reader isn’t prepared for that, it’s pretty upsetting especially if you’re in the mood for something lighter and that’s why you chose the read. Anastasia also battles with disordered eating- it can be a lot.

But I do think these stickier, darker parts of the characters add depth and help the understand their ‘why’. Overall, Icebreaker is an entertaining, easy read with some excellent spice intermixed with an endearing and contentious will-they-won’t they.

So very good! The third act conflict felt true to the characters and was well written, not just some random miscommunication like some romance books. I love the communally theme and the lack of damsel-in-distress storytelling. Only reason I didn’t finish it one day is because I have a toddler who wants to read his books. But it’s that good.
