I love quick spicy book, and this was a quick spicy book. I think this one was over recommended and my expectations were too high.

Content warning: disordered eating, parent neglecting child(ren) and high-control parent-child relationship, manipulative friendship/partnership, sexual assault

I had some trouble connecting with the main characters initially, and wasn't too motivated to pick it up again after pausing. Things definitely do pick up once Stasi and Nate get together, and I thought their relationship was sweet. I did get annoyed with how blasé the figure skating coach was towards Aaron's initial meanness towards Stasi
which then turned into assault, which I felt she was not the appropriate amount of horrified and while I get that it's supposed to show the perspective of a very ambitious team of skaters, that's still pretty fucked up that the coach witnessed it and basically said you need to suck it up buttercup and we'll deal with this later
. Overall, I did still enjoy this and it got me out of a mini-slump, and I'm looking forward to Book 3 that will come out this Summer. I thought the audiobook by Elizabeth Louise and Tim Paige was good.

If this book had been about a hundred and fifty pages shorter, I might have liked it. I still would have found it completely overhyped, but I would have been far less disappointed.

The biggest issue is that there is basically no plot, and when the plot does finally kick in - 40% of the way through the book - it's somehow sidelined. Don't promise me something in the summary and then make me wait 210 pages for it. Because of this, the book dragged on. I found that it had far too much filler and not enough plot. It needed more hockey, more skating, and far less drinking and college students hooking up. On top of that, I found Anastasia to be a whiny and unlikable character. She didn't act like a college senior with Olympic aspirations, but a middle school girl. The book has a perfect set-up for a slow burn, not-quite enemies to lovers, and blew it by having no plot.

pros
the concept is adorable. you can’t get much cuter than an ice skater and a hockey player.
great side characters. like, fucking adorable

cons
way too long
the main conflict happens around the 200 page mark but by then the two main characters are already together sooooo
the main character is adopted and she says she wants to adopt children. but she ends up pregnant in the epilogue anyways 🙃
too many nicknames. i would be happy never reading annie, anastasia, stas, stassie, nate, nathan, or nathaniel ever again
