It is a jarring transition from the aristocratic dilettante of [b:Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man|16171204|Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man|Siegfried Sassoon|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1356086755l/16171204._SY75_.jpg|1885119] to the desensitised war-weary man of this second volume. I'd forgotten just how self-deprecating Sassoon was, not only about his awards for gallantry, but also about his stand against the war (he is almost flippant about his understanding of his own motives and his ability to convey his objections). This is, as you would expect, a pretty grim affair which doesn't shy away from relaying either the tedium or the horror of trench life.

Of course if you want to know what Sassoon was really thinking you should read [a:Pat Barker|4000|Pat Barker|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1539120639p2/4000.jpg]'s magnificent [b:The Regeneration Trilogy|5877|The Regeneration Trilogy (Regeneration, #1-3)|Pat Barker|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1443440647l/5877._SY75_.jpg|1157830].

Do birds confabulate?
I enjoyed this book a good lot. I haven't read the first book, but even with that it was very readable. I wonder what it was like to be named Siegfried while fighting for the British in WW1.

Almost gave this one a miss after Memoirs of a Fox hunting Man was such a dreary slog. Either his style grew on me or I just found the content much more interesting. Looking forward to the last book in the trilogy.
