This is such an incredible story. The writer of this book takes such care in crafting such an important character like Kyoshi. I can really appreciate the depth and darkness this book takes in it's additions to the world building of the ATLA universe. Everything in this book if fully fleshed out and you can tell that Yee really respects the source material of the original show. This book definitely has dark moments, so approach this story with that in mind. I loved this book, it's one of the best I've read in a while, and I can't wait to start the sequel: The Shadow of Kyoshi.

I couldn’t get over the fact that a queer woman avatar’s story was written by a man. Overall, Kiyoshi’s story seemed fitting for what we see of her in ATLA, and the descriptions allowed me to picture how this would look animated. I’m left with unanswered questions, so I’ll be continuing into the next volume.

Absolutely amazing.  I was worried this book wouldn’t live up to the ATLA series but it was everything I wanted and more. The characters were complex and imperfect making it sometimes difficult to love them, but it made them all the more real

the world building in the avatar universe will never ever disappoint. it’s so interesting to learn about kyoshi’s background; her bending, the fans, the outfit, the makeup, it all holds so much importance. also loved seeing an avatar that’s kind of feared ? solely because of the circumstances she’s been put in and how she kind of moulds herself into this figure seen by the public because of said circumstances. it was really refreshing as well to see her grow from how timid she was to this powerful being.
this was a big upgrade in terms of violence and darkness compared to TLA where it was often sugarcoated to keep it PG and really caters to the audience/reader assuming that fans that grew up watching TLA are now adults.
ALSO really loved the mini Easter eggs and references to TLA

For what it is, this book is fantastic. If it was for a different demographic I may lower my rating a bit, but the story was actually very wonderful. It made me angry, and sad, and kept me coming back after every short break. Excited for the second!

The narrative being somewhat nonlinear was slightly confusing at times, but ultimately effective.

I don't know why, but I didn't expect so much death in an ATLA book!

Overall, an exciting book that managed to surprise, delight, and horrify me by turns. Filled with interesting characters and worldbuilding that fills out the world ATLA paints for us, I loved this both on its own as a story, AND as an addition to the ATLA universe.
