Absolutely amazing.  I was worried this book wouldn’t live up to the ATLA series but it was everything I wanted and more. The characters were complex and imperfect making it sometimes difficult to love them, but it made them all the more real

Did I absolutely adore this book my husband picked for us to listen to on long drives? Yes! Do you have to be an Avatar fan to enjoy it? No, but it's even better if you are. This book was such a fun telling of Kyoshi's beginning and what the world of Avatar looked like 300ish years before the show. It's a super fun ride. The characters are delighfup, the action is suspenseful, and the punches are not pulled.

I was delightfully surprised by the development of both the ATLA universe and Kyoshi's character, especially how it shows the evolution of a young girl, completely out of her element and just barely getting by, to the assertive and decisive avatar that Aang later asks for advice.

I think F.C. Yee took a typical revenge tale, embellished it with some reflection, and casually turned it on its head in a way that deserves some appreciation. It makes people think about the postivies and negatives of having such a singular, violent drive. It also gave Kyoshi that morally grey aspect that we all know and love, while adding to the humanity often cut out in memes.

The casual LGBTQ+ relationship was so wonderfully done and their bomd was very nice to read. It feels so pure and imbued with youth, but also doesn't overpower the story in an unnatural way (seeing as it's called The Rise of Kyoshi, it's good that remained the focus throughout the book).

The found family element to this and Kyoshi's own struggle with the definition of family was also an appreciated element, one I wouldn't have minded seeing capitalized a little more. There was one character in particular that I think was done well, but the rest felt a little lacking in comparison, and I really would have loved to see them all grow closer. If not just to make the parting at the end all the more painful. Her relationship with Lek was well done and was extremely sad when he died, would have liked a similar feeling when she had to part with the other characters. Because of this, I think the emotional hold this had over me was not what it could and should have been, which is what keeps it from the full set of 5 stars.

I stand somewhat neutrally on the side of pacing. It takes a pretty lengthy amount of time for anything to happen in the book, but at the same time it never feels like it was dragging to a painful extent. I do think the beginning half could have been sped up just the tiniest bit to allow a greater time for us to witness her training evolution, however I wouldn't call this a major detractor of the book, just me being picky.

Despite the book being about Kyoshi, I really appreciate how it also managed to characterize Kurak. It fell in line so nicely with Kyoshi's realization of how everything works in cycles, and allowed for the ending that we got! Makes me extremely curious to see what befalls Kyoshi next and how she'll shape the position of Avatar, and be shaped by it.
