This is such an incredible story. The writer of this book takes such care in crafting such an important character like Kyoshi. I can really appreciate the depth and darkness this book takes in it's additions to the world building of the ATLA universe. Everything in this book if fully fleshed out and you can tell that Yee really respects the source material of the original show. This book definitely has dark moments, so approach this story with that in mind. I loved this book, it's one of the best I've read in a while, and I can't wait to start the sequel: The Shadow of Kyoshi.

I really enjoyed seeing the story of kyoshi unfold! It wasn't a life changing book, as with a lot of prequels, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the twists that were managed to be thrown in.

This was a phenomenal read. Very fast paced where it mattered and gives you the rush we’re all familiar with as fans of the Avatar series. I love reading the start of Kyoshi’s journey from discovering she’s the Avatar, her difficulties in accepting that, loss, grief, acceptance, the whole deal. The author did a beautiful job painting the story of an Avatar that is so wholly popular but switches it on its head by showing us she wasn’t always the take-no-bullshit Avatar we’ve come to see her as. And given what we do know about her in the later series, we see the events that happen and the decisions she makes to eventually become the makings of that person. Genuinely such a fun read, couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait to read the sequel.

Anyone who likes the ATLA series/franchise should definitely read this book. I love love love Kyoshi and she’s such a unique character. Especially comparing her to the other avatars, her story is so interesting and different from anyone else’s. The other characters are also so enjoyable, I adore everyone. Kyoshi and Rangi <3
