Push everything you thought about Kyoshi from the beloved TV series aside and be immersed in the beginning stages of her life and training. Every page solidified her case for justice, doing right by her promises and ambitions. Fall in love with the unlikely cast of characters she inherited from her parents much like her iconic fans and headdress.
While she never knew her parents as well as her bending teachers, she found that she may not have been too different in idealogoy
Breaking the tradition of avatars being groomed and trained from young childhood, The Rise of Kyoshi makes you question what you thought about their role in the universe entirely along with Kyoshi herself.

This is such an incredible story. The writer of this book takes such care in crafting such an important character like Kyoshi. I can really appreciate the depth and darkness this book takes in it's additions to the world building of the ATLA universe. Everything in this book if fully fleshed out and you can tell that Yee really respects the source material of the original show. This book definitely has dark moments, so approach this story with that in mind. I loved this book, it's one of the best I've read in a while, and I can't wait to start the sequel: The Shadow of Kyoshi.

This was a really fast paced and great read! I loved seeing another angle of the Avatar world and following Kyoshi as a young woman rather than the powerful legend you see her as in the show was interesting. I think the only thing that prevented this from being a 5 for me was just some of the pacing? Overall it was fast paced but occasionally things happened fast enough to where I had to double back as I’d missed a little tidbit that was more important than I’d realized. But overall really enjoyed it, I look forward to grabbing the second one from my library!

I couldn’t get over the fact that a queer woman avatar’s story was written by a man. Overall, Kiyoshi’s story seemed fitting for what we see of her in ATLA, and the descriptions allowed me to picture how this would look animated. I’m left with unanswered questions, so I’ll be continuing into the next volume.

This is a perfect book for those who enjoyed ATLA and are apart of the fandom. It’s a perfect way to start off a prequel and to showcase just how Kyoshi became the icon that she is. I already knew she was amazing but seeing her journey solidifies that even more. This was a great book to start the year off with and I can’t wait to start book 2.
