This novel did sisters so well. Sometimes they were frustrating. I dare you to say you read this book and didn't, at one point or many, want to strangle Birdie. But that's sisters for you. The bond between them, in all its frustrating glory, is what makes this book. In comparison, the rest of the plot(which I can't really elaborate on because it's a whole nest of spoilers) is merely okay. This is a YA title so it can be forgiven for treading familiar ground(after all, it's probably many readers' first encounter with what I'd consider to be tired tropes), but to a seasoned reader there isn't going to be much of a twist here. You might want to read it anyway though, just for the characters.

What I really didn't like, though, was that one of the plot elements felt fantastical. I can't explain too much without spoiling, but essentially an otherwise mundane story had what amounted to a pouch of special dust that you sprinkled on things to cause a magical effect. It felt very out of place to me as I was reading.

Important question time! Does the dog and/or bird die? (Minor spoilers ahead!) Two different characters own a pet dog and a pet bird of prey. Both are okay. However, the sisters do live on a homestead and there's discussion of livestock being used for sustenance.
