There is a wonderful novella in this book but the effort to fill it out to novel length didn’t work for me.  Marketed as a collection of linked short stories I might have appreciated it more, but it give me what I want from a novel.

I’m coming to the conclusion that I truly do not understand literary fiction

I liked Bob. I liked that he lived a small, quiet life that suited him. I liked that he liked books and being a librarian. I liked that, through volunteering, he became a part of a community for the first time in his life and discovered joy there. And yet, I wouldn't recommend this book. I'd have liked the book so much more if the flashbacks hadn't happened, especially the 2nd one. I expected more literary references and wish there'd been more of them. Overall, this was a disappointing read.

I'd like to pick this up again. It's hitting a little close to home with real life circumstances. And I'm in the mood for something a little faster paced right now.
