This book felt much slower than the others, and there were a lot of scenes that I would consider to be filler (didn't drive the plot in any way but was just a kinda fun pit stop). I still have an issue with the superficial dialog between Callie and Temper (who even talks to their best friend that way ALL of the time???), and Temper's lack of development when she played a bigger role in this book. I really think the author should have thought twice before writing a black woman as the protagonist's best friend to only write her as the "angry black woman" trope personified and never getting deeper than that.

As far as the rest of the book goes, I thought Callie was a little dumb when it came to putting together clues. Some things were very clear, but I was surprised later when she would have an outburst and explicitly announce her epiphany when I thought she had already put 1 and 1 together. She didn't.

I did really really enjoy the romance between Des and Callie though and I thought their story was very compelling. I really did enjoy this series and it is pretty high up in my fantasy romance list, but the overall effect was dampened by the cringing I did after reading scenes with Temper.
