This was pretty cute, and a quick read. I didn't write a review right away because of the semester ending, so I've forgotten a lot of what happened. But the vibes I remember were fun, and I liked it enough to jump into the second book right after.

2.5*s. This book has some wacky highs and lows.

High: Learning to stand up for oneself against a lifetime of abuse is quite an epic character journey.
Low: But the way it is oversimplified in the book and tied to the romantic relationship is both trite and undermines that journey.

High: There is some true and sad social commentary in this book, which surprised me, given the format.
Low: that commentary is sprinkled in throw away sentences that as forgotten the next moment never to be referenced again.

High: A demon in the process of growing a conscience is extremely entertaining to observe.
Low: The main relationship is positioned as once in a lifetime true love, but looks rather suspiciously like insta-lust. The account of sex references and descriptions only strengthen that impression. That was very disappointing, because there was so much potential in that setup for something deeper.

High: The writing is easy to read.
Low: The writing is flippant and simplistic, making many characters sound too similar to each other.

High: The plot is both comfortably predictable and unpredictably bonkers.
Low: The plot is both comfortably predictable and unpredictably bonkers, and there's just too much of it — the book didn't need to be this long.

There are plenty more, but not much point in listing it all.
So this is 2.5*, but my reaction leaned too close to 'meh', so I don't feel like rounding up.
