I wanted to like this book so much more than I actually did. It's a great concept- a collection of comics all by Indigenous authors and illustrators. It just didn't really come together.

Okay, lots to unpack here. I'll be 100% honest, the cover is what drew me to this collection. I love it enough that I contacted the author to try to buy a print.
The stories were as varied as the artwork. Each was fascinating in its own way, and each could easily have been the start of a larger story. Well worth tracking down!

We in Canada have done some disgusting things to indigenous communities in our short 150 years. This is a fantastic way to save and spread parts of indigenous history/culture. Many indigenous communities here suffer from low literacy rates (partially caused by the residential schools) which makes the idea of presenting these stories in art an even better idea. Stunningly beautiful gorgeous artwork. Can't wait for vol. 2

I came across Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection, Volume 1 entirely by chance, during a browse through a comic book shop while traveling. During my many romps through #ownvoices and #WNDB listicles online, Moonshot or AH Comics had literally never appeared. With its glossy, photo-paper interior and drop-dead gorgeous art, I was primed to be impressed by the stories. And, delightfully, I was.
Both the forward by editor Hope Nicholson and introduction by author & researcher Michael Sheyahshe emphasized how these stories were by and for Native Americans: this collection was designed to express, affirm, and uplift the authors' ever-living, vibrant communities on the broad platform of comics. The anthology features stories from many different North American tribes, and paragraphs before each piece provide context and tribe name. The stories themselves were joyful and frightening by turns, but always beautiful. No beats missed, no wrong notes hit: smacked that ball right out of the park. I had to constantly remind myself to not "ooh" and "omg yesss" and otherwise vibrate out of my seat while reading.
The ethos of this collection was respectful sharing, and I felt deeply honored to read it. As a fan of Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony, I knew in theory that indigenous storytelling was about the past, present, and future, but I felt it down to my bones reading Moonshot. As soon as I turned the last page, I was eager for more. Moonshot's Volume 2 as well as AH Comic's Jewish Comix Anthology will be snapped up as soon as I see 'em.

Most of these short comics felt like they were just beginning to scratch the surface and could have been fleshed out, but I am so happy this project was undertaken and look forward to reading more of these authors/artists in depth.

Γνωρίζοντας ότι οι γηγενείς της Αμερικής είναι πολύ προστατευτικοί με τις ιστορίες τους και σπάνια τις χρησιμοποιούν ως μέσο διασκέδασης, ήθελα πάρα πολύ να διαβάσω αυτό το graphic novel. Πολλοί λευκοί έχουν προσπαθήσει να πουν τις ιστορίες των γηγενών της Αμερικής και οι περισσότεροι τους βλέπουμε μέσα από το δικό μας, λευκό πρίσμα. Αυτό το graphic novel μας επιτρέπει να τους δούμε καθαρά και να μάθουμε τις ιστορίες τους μέσα από τους ίδιους.
Θεωρώ ότι είναι σημαντικό να είμαστε ανοιχτοί στον τρόπο που θα διαβάσουμε αυτό το graphic novel γιατί αν και σε αρκετά πράγματα μοιάζει με τα δυτικού τύπου comics και τα graphic novels που έχουμε συνηθίσει να διαβάσουμε, υπάρχουν και αρκετά σημεία στα οποία διαφέρει. Πρέπει να θυμόμαστε ότι οι ιστορίες των γηγενών της Αμερικής είναι μέρος της παράδοσής τους και έχουν περάσει προφορικά από γενιά σε γενιά. Γι'αυτό και ο τρόπος αφήγησής τους μπορεί να διαφέρει από αυτόν που έχουμε συνηθίσει. Κάποιες από τις 13 ιστορίες που θα διαβάσετε στο Moonshot vol 1 δεν έχουν τη συνηθισμένη αφήγηση με αρχή, μέση και τέλος. Είναι περισσότερο σαν μια ματιά σε κάποιο γεγονός. Επιπλέον, διαθέτει μια ιστορία που φέρνει περισσότερο σε εικονογραφημένο διήγημα. Όλες τους πάντως έχουν κάτι να μας διδάξουν.
Όσον αφορά την εικονογράφηση, είναι θαυμάσια από την πρώτη μέχρι την τελευταία σελίδα. Περιέχει αρκετά διαφορετικά στυλ τα οποία έχουν προσαρμοστεί στην κάθε ιστορία δίνοντας ένα υπέροχο αποτέλεσμα. Προσωπικό αγαπημένο είναι το Vision quest: Echo όπου κάθε σελίδα είναι και ένα ξεχωριστό οπτικό ταξίδι. Η Echo, μια γηγενής - λατίνα υπερηρωίδα, είναι κωφή και μαθαίνει να μιλάει μέσω των οπτικών μέσων. Ο χαρακτήρας αυτός έχει δημιουργηθεί από τον David Mach και είναι κομμάτι του Marvel Universe.
Επιπλέον, μου άρεσε πολύ το γεγονός ότι κάποιες από τις παραδοσιακές ιστορίες των γηγενών της Αμερικής έχουν τοποθετηθεί σε ένα φουτουριστικό πλαίσιο αποδεικνύοντας ότι πρόκειται για ιστορίες με διαχρονική αξία.
Έχουν εκδοθεί δύο ακόμα τόμοι της σειράς Moonshot, και θα είναι σίγουρα μέσα στις επόμενες αγορές μου. Θεωρώ ότι είναι μια συλλογή που θα έπρεπε να υπάρχει σε κάθε βιβλιοθήκη και που αξίζει να διαβαστεί πολλές φορές.
