This is my book club’s choice for November, and I brought a poster with 100 books to read in your lifetime. So, this is the seventeenth book I've read on this poster. I went into this book completely blind, but I was nervous because I have struggled with books on the poster. This one did take me a while to get into but holy mother of Christ. That ending!!!

This book is based on Richard as he attends a liberal arts college. He has just pushed against his parents' wishes to be a doctor and he wants to study geek and English literature. When Richard gets to this college, all he wants to do is fit in with the wealthy and charming students. He wants to be friends with them, and he is going to fake it until he makes it within this group especially considering he has a rough and poor background. This groups are in a small class with the influence of their classic's professor, they are going to discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from their college. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal mortality their lives are changed profoundly and forever.

I always struggle with Dark Academica, I don’t know what it is about it, but we just don’t get along. However, with this book starting with a bit in the middle and then we see the build-up, I was hooked. I wanted to know who planned this murder of Bunny. Each of these characters had a lot of personality and were all 3D, it wasn’t like there was one character that was just there to move the story alone. I loved and hated each of these characters, they were driving me up the walls, but I wanted to hug them at the same time. I did have a soft spot for Henry and Richard, and I know I shouldn’t have had a soft spot for Henry because he was a dick for 95% of this book, but I just loved him.

However, there were a few things that I don’t think were needed – Charles and Camilla near the end (That is giving Cassandra Clare a run for her money) and I just have so many freaking questions about the ending. Considering I don’t usually like the Dark Academica, it did take me a while to get into plus again Donna Tartt is giving Cassandra Clare a run for her money with how long these chapters were. (8 chapters over 629 pages). I ended up like dividing the chapters myself and making them smaller to get through it quicker.

I cannot wait to discuss this book within book club and seeing everyone’s theories and thoughts on this and I am interested to see more of Donna’s work.

The premises was great, the writing is beautiful. However, i find it lazy to take 8 years to write a book and relying on slurs to make a commentary on dark academia. Hearing the audiobook narrated by the author and saying these slurs with her whole chest was definitely something.
