Brooklyn through the lens of love
Loved the inter generational love story and sense of community developed in this multiple perspective novel. Modern Lovers rang true to it's title and more, great for the hopeless romantics amongst us.

Why oh why are books like this becoming the new normal? As with other recent "hot" summer reads, this novel seems empty of any substance or value beyond it's superficial "juiciness" (that didn't even kick in for me until about halfway through). Centered on a cast of characters to whom I felt no real connection and driven only by a few outlandish plot lines, it's a poor man's "A Visit from the Goon Squad" at best.
The audio version was great- perfect for commuting- not too heavy but interesting themes of love and marriage and characters that I became invested in.
Modern Lovers is that perfect summer read that manages to feel both familiar and ultimately exciting. Really enjoyed it.
DNF. Not bad, just not great. Nothing really drew me into the story. Maybe I'll try again some other time, but probably not.
This rating was tough bc most mediocre books will get at least a 3 from me but I just did not like this story or characters. It was fine and I can see how other might’ve liked it well enough but it took me 6 weeks to read bc it just wasn’t compelling. I wanted to like the characters but there wasn’t a single one I didn’t want to punch in the face. Nothing interesting happened. It just…was.
This is...okay. It has the occasional funny moment, but it's boring. The characters and plot feel stereotypical and are terrible without being interesting. Eighteen-year-old Ruby is the most intriguing, but she still made me roll my eyes.
I didn't hate all parts of this book. I only loved a very few sentences. The adult POVs were written more believably than the teens. I wish it had ended without the newspaper clippings... I always want to guess those things for myself.
Okay, Straub is a genius at capturing the quiet reality of relationships and the day to day ebb and flow of positive and negative feelings toward each other. Her writing captures moments that are so relatable and just damn real. This novel centered on two long-term marriages and one teenage fling that meant very different things to the two teens involved, and all three relationships had aspects that had to be familiar to all readers who've ever loved another. I just savored every paragraph in this novel, and I wished it would never end.
I have not read anything by this author but I will read more of her work- this was a fun read with complex characters who lead realistic lives-personal history impacts current life and relationships, even and especially the history we do not think about every day.
