Nothing really happens. But characters exit the novel vastly different people than when they entered. So actually, a lot happens.

Maybe just the location, but this reminded me of the book "Cobble Hill."

An enjoyable read but nothing that will stick with me...in fact several weeks after finishing I had to refresh my memory as to what the book was even about before rating it.

Very enjoyable, if hardly pushing the boundaries, contemporary novel set in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, about the relationships between two couples and their teen children. I might have enjoyed it more of the review in the New York Times had not completely given the plot away! It reminded me somewhat of Meg Wolitzer's The Interestings, but the characters were lower key and less, uh, interesting, but in a good way. A good but not great audiobook - the narrator sounded slightly robotic at times - perfect exercise listening.

i really liked it! i left a star out for some plot points that i wish there were extra detail on, like more history about the band

3.5 stars, really. Modern Lovers is the story of three college friends who are each going through their own version of a midlife crisis. Zoe, Elizabeth, and Andrew (and their children Harry and Ruby) are dealing with finding their individual identity in the midst of other problems -- the potential of divorce, career changes, children going off to college (or not), sexual identity. Some of these problems are very real, and I could find myself identifying with the characters at various points. However, these three are immensely entitled and I could find myself rolling my eyes at some of their complaints. This is very much a white, upper-class, urban book with many of the problems that one might expect and that really, in the grand scheme of life, aren't that big of a deal. It's a good quick summer read, and Straub is quite an excellent writer. I would recommend it, but I would also be prepared for some unrealistic aspects and a somewhat lackluster ending. [It doesn't always turn out perfectly for everyone at the end of the day, and tying everything up with a pretty little bow was disappointing for me.]

not bad just nothing about it that’s interesting enough to be good! a chill no thoughts head empty beach type read.

Loved. I could have read hundreds more pages of these folks

First of the two Emma named authors whose books I listened to while on vacation. Both were horrible. This one had a story line but it was boring. You didn't care or disliked the characters. I found many annoying. The most pitiful part was at the end while the son, who seemed to have a great deal of potential, was using the story told as the novel he was writing for his dissertation. Lame! The characters had potential but the story was mundane, a tale of anyone's life. Not what I look for in a book.
