I loved reading such a detailed history focused on a mundane object we take for granted. I especially enjoyed the drama between well-respected physicists we learn about even in school.
I did find the book a little repetitive at times, and perhaps a little unforgiving to some real historical figures.

A well-written and detailed history, albeit one that unfortunately does not address the legacy of colonialism and veers a little too often into "great man" history.
Graphic: Colonisation, Animal cruelty, Violence, Medical content, Terminal illness, Gore, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: War, Racism, and Murder
Includes a graphic description of scurvy victims, graphic description of animal cruelty, and stereotyped descriptions of Indigenous people
