Did not finish.

Absolutely loved this beautiful collection. When I finished it I couldn’t resist flipping back to the beginning to read again, just to enjoy this exquisite writing a bit more. I don’t usually go for short stories but this one… whew.

This was a captivating glimpse into the fictional lives of Black New Yorkers through a collection of short stories. Set against the vibrant Brooklyn backdrop, these stories showcase diverse voices and experiences within the urban landscape. Brinkley's ability to capture such a wide range of perspectives is impressive. Each story feels distinct, with its unique cadence and narrative style. The depth of character development within each story was remarkable. Despite their brevity, the characters felt fully realized, and their interpersonal relationships and inner conflicts were explored with nuance and sensitivity. While each story stands alone, there's a sense of interconnectedness running through the collection. Themes of identity, belonging, and human connection resonated with me. This collection is a flex of literary talent and a tour of the human condition.
