Imani Perry does a beautiful job of crafting a portrait of Lorraine Hansberry. Following her childhood and family's involvement in a Supreme Court case involving restrictive covenants, Perry shows the experiences and community interactions that influenced Hansberry's growth as an activist artist. This narrative highlights Lorraine's close relationships with James (to her, Jimmy) Baldwin and Nina Simone, and questions why Lorraine Hansberry did not receive the same attention as these friends. Perry shows Hansberry's continued commitment to asking big questions and deep philosophy throughout her early and hard-fought battle with cancer.

Lorraine Hansberry was an amazing Black lesbian, commie, organizer and writer. I am now committed to learning more about her, and I'm so excited for this journey. This book is captivating and well-written, but probably not best for someone who doesn't want to hear the narrator's voice in a biography.
