Well this was fabulous. I can definitely see why it gets compared to Rebecca, it's incredibly atmospheric and genuinely creepy. The writing is fantastic, and the descriptions (especially Andres' at the beginning) are so vivid they all but leap off the page. The tension builds nicely, and there are some very unsettling things happening. I also really appreciated the look into the class differences of the various characters, it was a great look into a period of history I don't know much about. I would have liked a bit more about Andres powers, and I would have liked a page or two for an epilogue. Really great debut, can't wait to read any future works.

This book is definitely vibes, though I struggled to get into it until around the halfway mart. The historical part of the historical fiction was pretty neat and enjoyable.

There were parts that could be predictable.  But my god.  It was a solidly entertaining ghost story.  And consider me a Padre Andres fan.

This story had great bones but it just didn't work for me.

I did find myself fully immersed in the scary scenes, to the point that I could only read this in daylight. Unfortunately, I wasn't much interested in the rest. Neither the mystery, nor the romance were compelling and sometimes it felt like the author didn't really know her characters. The horror/magic didn't seem to have any rules either, which made the ending a bit anticlimactic.

This was a debut novel so I'm willing to try this author again in the future.

CW: rape (mentioned), casual ableism, blood, war/colonialism, colourism/racism, violence, death, classism, gaslighting

this is a slow historical gothic horror with romance sprinkled within, dual perspective, and a few flashbacks. overall I really enjoyed it! slow historical isn't usually part of any genre I usually read, but im really glad I gave this one a try. gorgeous writing, creepy atmosphere, supernatural and spooky, I was hooked. can't wait to read more from cañas in the future!

I felt like I waited tensely for something to happen which was exciting
but nothing really did? Not sure what it is, but maybe "the dark" was too vague to be scary...
