This is one of the only books that I've had to put down multiple times because it felt like my heart was breaking.

I honestly don't know what to say. The grief upon grief upon grief is overwhelming and her descriptions of her her sons, her husband and her parents just so compellingly normal and simple and all the more raw and shatteringly horrendous as she struggles to comprehend a life, a world without them.

The most poignant to me was how she goes home and everything is just as it was, except - of course - she is alone, and there is no chance they will ever BE there again - the never, never of it all. It just isn't fair, which sounds blase, but the base unfairness of it just gets me right in the belly. Like a punch.

The wave destroyed everything, and I cannot imagine the devastation. Even through Sonali's words, it is too much for any human being to understand or fathom.

Was bracing for impact but found myself actually rather bored, and then I felt guilty.
