Heartbreaking

Gut-wrenching but beautiful in her love for her family and eventually herself again.

I expected more information on "the event" - the tsunami that took her family. I was curious why I wasn't getting more emotional about the story -- I generally cry at the drop of a hat, and certainly about children dying -- and then last night, about 1/3rd of the way through, I did cry. But overall it resonated with me less than I thought it would, and I'm not sure why.

Beautiful, heartbreaking and ultimately so rewarding. This book is hard to read at times as the author recounts losing her husband, two small sons, and parents in one moment in the tsunami that devastated South and Southeast Asia. As she crawls her way back to life and finds a way to reclaim the memory of her family without driving herself insane, she gives you a peek into the beauty of ordinary life and how lucky we are to lead it. Truly memorable and special.

A harrowing read about the few horrible moments on Boxing Day, 2004, when the author lost her entire family to a tsunami, and her struggle to survive, utterly alone in the world.

Damn. This true story is so sad. I blasted through this book in a day because it was so good though.

Detailed review to come.
