Ik vind het fascinerend en ontzagwekkend dat heel het oeuvre van Ernaux gewoon bestaat uit auto-etnografieën. Ik weet dat erg is beïnvloed door Proust, maar voor mij voelt de schrijfstijl toch anders aan. Ernaux is afstandelijker, wetenschappelijker, vervreemdender. Het is het vergeefs proberen te duiden van een eigen leven, en dat presenteren aan de wereld. Het heeft iets egocentrisch, maar het is tegelijk het toegeven dat men niets anders echt kent dan de zelf. Ernaux goes deeply into the milieu of her town in Normandy and her Catholic education, in a somewhat detached way as an anthropologist might, although of course it is her lived experience and the point of view is hers. Yes, she does this in other books too, but it felt more pronounced here and made the book less interesting to me than the others I've read.
