I read this book because I recently started a French course and I'd like to read more and gain a better vocabulary and although it was a difficult experience at first, it definitely paid off as I genuinely enjoyed the author's writing. It was enchanting and at traits gruesome in the way it perfectly described the feeling of being a teenager in a world that you don't yet understand, signaling the end of your childhood with the incom of violence and shame. At times I felt like the writer lost herself but in general I truly enjoyed the book, especially as it was one of the first from the author and I coudl relate to her eperience as it was perfectly perfomed as it could be an everyday experience.
Truly a wonderful book.

set in 1952 france, a confessional story detailing how the author worked to make sense of and bridge the world she knew before the day her father tried to kill her mother and what she knew of the world after. includes explorations of collective history, community, social norms, shame, identity, socio economic status, post war, etc. the author performs an “ethnological study” on herself and her memories (and the way shame bridges versions of herself). very clean and clinical style of writing/investigation of self.
