This feels like it took me forever to read because it was so dense. But the world building and the character building was absolutely needed. I enjoyed this book a lot and I loved the magic system and the parameters of said magic system. The characters felt very real and alive and overall I will continue the series because I loved the characters so much. The only reason I deducted a star was because it felt like too much information at times and I struggled to pay attention. But the chapters were on the shorter side and alternating characters helped a lot.

::Spoilers ahead::
Esta is a really great main character for this. As a time traveler and thief she set the stage for the book. She is sent back in time to steal a magical book before it disappears just as she has all the other magical artifacts before it. she has to maneuver her way in a world that doesn't look kindly upon mageus or on women. Compounded with a secret society hellbent on destroying her kind and the headstrong men she has been tasked to maneuver around? She makes for a force to be reckoned with.

On top of that the story is interwoven with so many other complex pieces that move their way around this old world chessboard in a magical (heh) way. I loved how everything came to a head at the end. I cannot wait to see what the next book holds. You can tell this was a labor of love for the author. It shows in the characters and the story itself.

The Last Magician
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved the universe and being in a different time, but with magic as well.
Of course, I really liked Harte, he reminded me a bit of Will Herondale, but not as great if you know what I mean. The romance was slow, and I don’t have anything to complain about, except that I just hope we get more in the following books!

It was great how everyone played their own game and that we got to se it from different perspectives. There wasn’t a character that irritated me too, except when they’re doing something stupid though.

I loved that you kind of had to guess which ability someone had since we at first didn’t get to know.
The magic is so cool! I want to have an ability too!

This book had a great plot in my opinion and tbh, a laughed and got shocked by plot twists regularly so it wasn’t as boring as I thought it would be when I started.
Secret societies in 1900th century and magic, what’s better than that?

I had a major problem though, things just popped up and boom, I was reminded of something from a different book:

The Darkest Minds Series:
Viola, which I love very much, got called Vi. So I read The Darkest Minds series a couple of months ago, and every time Viola gets called by the nickname Vi, I’m just thinking of Vida, which also gets called Vi.

So Harte’s ability is that when he’s touching someone he then can put images in their head and “control” them. That’s exactly what Ruby does!

The Grisha Triology:
So Jianyu can bend light and become invisible, and that’s what Alina did too.

When Esta said that it was impossible that Nibsy was Professor Lachlan, he said “Not impossible but improbable”. That was what Nikolai Lantsov kept saying!

So Dolph I think said “Like called to like”, you kidding me?! I got stuck with The Grisha Triology in my head when that popped up too.

The Devouring Gray:
And speaking of Dolph, his last name was Saunders, I’m then thinking of The Devouring Gray and Violet Saunders.

And somehow, Logan’s last name is Sullivan?! Are you shitting me? Isaac Sullivan!

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone:
So suddenly something about The Philosopher’s Stone comes up, and of course I’m thinking of Harry Potter...

I didn’t think much of the writing style, I guess it was okey and nothing I would have bragged about. Yes, of course it was good, but nothing special.

I have to say tho, I’m unfortunately a moodreader, and this was not the book for me at the time. I should’ve chosen a contemporary or something cause this wasn’t it. That’s probably why I didn’t enjoy this as much as I had hoped.

Anyway, I think this was an okey read taking into a count that I wasn’t in the mood for it. Therefore I gave it a 3 star rating.

This book was okay. The writing wasn’t bad or anything but frankly the story was a bit boring - too drawn out.
