I don’t know how I wanted to rate this. 2.5ish?? I didn’t like the book but I enjoyed the style of the writing. I mean I must have because I finished this novel rather quickly. Rooney is such a strange writer. I never know how to review her books. Moderate profanity. Moderate sexual content.

this was a GREAT READ!!!! I loved how Rooney punctuated plot with more reflective passages in first person. its a great way to kind of reflect and keep the mind sharp while reading a great novel. you also 100% have to read felix in an irish accent hellaur?!? i loved how religion was described and i think we are all in search of a beautiful world. read to find it!!
my favorite part was when there was a reference to relationships being the dying thought of people. i feel like it novels seem trivial historically, and what are we doing writing/reading them in this insane f-ed up world. but she makes sense of it all!! also, i didn’t super buy felix and alice in the end, but i think it’s just about searching for beauty and not practicality.

The dialogue and writing correspondence between the two main characters took centre stage in this novel, and Rooney displays
her brilliance in creating really intense episodes of emotional conflict. Plot certainly takes a back seat but I thought its slow pace resembled the mundane and fleeting nature of the (beautiful?) every day very effectively.
