Jehoshaphat!!! This was just okay. Too dated for a science fiction piece unfortunately. There was a slide rule in this futuristic novel. And the dialogue was interminably ridiculous. Jehoshaphat!!!

Asimov imagines a future centuries from now where the 20th century and the time before robots is considered "medieval." Earth is choked by overpopulation, and the cities are tightly-packed "caves of steel." Only those brave enough to colonize other worlds have preserved the freedom that once was humanity's. Asimov has some interesting concepts with this world. However, the potential magic of the new colonies is replaced by a dull and predictable detective story. The most interesting character is the robot sidekick--a clear precursor to Star Trek's Data. However, Asimov's robot stays a robot, and we don't get to see him learn much of anything about humanity. Sadly, this was a disappointing read.
