I stopped after 40 pages. It was on par with reading my 6th grade religion text book again. I usually think educational is a good thing, but this was written like it was trying to baby explain the ancient Jewish family and social system and I've had enough watered-down, try-to-teach-you-without-you-realizing-it-by-using-a-story religious texts in 12 years of Catholic school to bother with one more, thank you very much.

Considering this was written by such a “name” author I was really underwhelmed. With a few small exceptions it didn’t seem substantially different than a blending of the more familiar gospels.

Short review: I cannot really recommend this. It is a first person fictional account of Jesus. That isn't the problem. I am not opposed to fictional accounts of Jesus. But Mailer's version of God is a weak deist god that is equal with Satan. And a Jesus that learns more from Judas and Satan than from God the father. I just didn't find it all that interesting.

The story was so well told and the language so appropriate for the period and in context with the language used in the Bible that you actually felt that this was the gospel according to Jesus Christ. Perhaps this is why at the time of reading it didn't feel so special, and perhaps I should have appreicated it more.

I think he did a good job of exploring how Jesus may have struggled with what his purpose was and his relationships. I did not agree with all of the details but I liked the concept of the book. If you did not have a good knowledge of the Bible it may be confusing.

Кун проштудировал сложные, метафоричные тексты Овидия, Гомера, Гесиода и прочих, чтобы предоставить бодрую, написанную простым языком, выжимку с приключениями античных ребят. Норман Мейлер сделал примерно то же самое с Новым Заветом, только вместо безликой ретрансляции “грейтест хитс” из четырёх каноничных Евангелий, он рассказал всё от имени Иисуса. Это помогло нарисовать портрет живого, мятущегося, обуреваемого соблазнами человека, вместо того ходящего по воде супергероя, к которому все привыкли. Иисус Мейлера очень человечен, а все его чудеса обязательно заканчиваются психологическим опустошением с долгим последующим восстановлением. Жаль, Мейлер не рискнул изменить больше деталей и не пошел ещё дальше: его чересчур ревностное следование первоисточнику, особенно в плане интонации, ближе к концу начинает подбешивать своей избыточной высокодуховностью.
Сначала читал предвзято, нацепив саркастичную оптику и посмеиваясь над высокопарностью слога, чуть позже, когда начало увлекать, поймал себя на мысли, что воспринимаю это как условные легенды и мифы древней Иудеи, а потом втянулся окончательно и разглядел необычно прописанных персонажей за привычными архетипами. Не думал, что когда-нибудь скажу такое про библейский контент, но это было неожиданно увлекательно.

رواية تعمل على أنسنة المسيح وتقريبه من الواقع لاقتراح دين بعيد عن المثاليات. قدم الكاتب انحرافات طفيفة ملتزمًا بأحداث النص الأصلي (الإنجيل) ولكنه ملأ ما بين السطور بتفسيره الخاص لهذه الأحداث. لسبب ما لم أشعر بعمق الرواية ولم أستمتع بالطرح. ولكن أعجبتني الترجمة جدًا. نظرًا لاحتواء الرواية على نصوص مقتبسة من الإنجيل عمل المترجم على استخدام لغة شبيهة بلغة الإنجيل حتى خارج الاقتباسات لكيلا يكون هناك فصل لغوي ضمن كلام الشخصية نفسها. من الممتع رؤية مترجمين يكتبون بلغة النص وليس بلغتهم الخاصة، وهذا أكثر ما شدني لإنهاء الكتاب.

A good read for the beginning of Lent. The whole time I was reminded of Marjorie Holmes' THE MESSIAH, yet it was very different from that. Mailer's Jesus tells his story in the first person, and it's the familiar story, but he is unsure of himself at times and worries over whether he is saying the right thing. Mailer made him very very human, which was kind of interesting, and an intriguing way to approach the gospel. I thought it was well written -- but I think I liked it better than, say, someone not as familiar with the gospels.
