Wish I could do separate reviews for the first and second half of this book, the first half was slow, the characters did not draw me in,  the plot felt drawn out - I would have dnf'd several times over if I had not seen the movie years ago and known there was a big twist.
The second half of the book was fantastic- worth the drudgery of the first half - the characters were more compelling, and the plot greatly sped up

Very much a AAH situation.

I was interested enough to want to find out what happened, but goodness it felt long winded. For me that padding also undercut the impressiveness of the “cleverness”.

I suspect the reveal in Part 2 was meant to be a surprise twist, but wasn’t for me.

Also, didn’t help that the closest to “likeable” was a couple of the side characters, and even then it was a struggle.

If it weren’t a book club read, I doubt I’d have persevered. Certainly, I didn’t feel the ending provided sufficient payoff to make the longwindedness worthwhile.

I could not put this book down once I picked it up. I love the change in tone half-way through the book and I appreciate the author giving us one of the best monologues on the “cool girl” in the 21st century.

So caveat on this review, I was spoiled in the twist years ago and just finally got around to reading it, so I think that played a factor in my enjoyment in it. I actually found myself enjoying it more after the plot twist, but I don’t think I found a myself liking either main character much, which I guess was a lesson that I do prefer to like the MC? It didn’t help that I realized not to the same degrees but I had a set of grandparents very much like Nick and Amy and who boy that was a weird realization to have. So yeah, good plot, lots of twists and turns, just really hard to like either one. I know the book is part of the #goodforher trope, but…I dunno, I didn’t fully buy it.
