Oh. my. god. That pretty much sums up my reaction for/through the entire book. Pivot Point by Kasie West is an intriguing and fast-paced unbelievably awesome book!! Kasie West craftily wove this story and Praise her and her talent!! So I decided to divide this review between the Para and the Norm, her choices, so it's easier to understand
______________________________________________________________________________
PARA(normal):
I love the way the Compound was described as if it was totally another world even though it's not. Their powers just having to do with the mind? Total awesomeness. It's nice and different to the super strength and flying. One thing about the Para's though was how haughty they were and how condescending they could be to the Norms (humans). It was irritating how much they looked down upon them but it was something I think needed to show more of their characters and their arrogance.
Addie, well Para Addie, felt a bit bland and boring for my taste It was pretty funny seeing her seriously go through her "rebellious-my parents got divored". She was determined to do all the things teens (meaning book characters or movie actors) supposedly did when that happened to them. i.e dating the blond quarterback of her school's football team who totally contrasts her, Duke.
Duke. What can I say about him? Honestly, I shipped him and Addie so much in the beginning of the book! I loved watching their relationship and they were adorable! He's so charismatic and charming, you'll just end up falling for him. But then you keep reading and you know something isn't right and it leads to a bigger thing that starts to interconnect with the Norms. Then BAM, And you're just done with Duke -_- And let's not forget about Addie's awesomesauce best friend who has her back and vice versa.
NORM:
Addie's character started to develop waaaay more in her Norm life as she gets adjusted to her life outside the Compound. She started growing her wings and flew her way through not knowing what to expect. And oh my gaaaawd it's HILARIOUS watching Addie act like a "Norm" meaning she tries making conversation with the poor mailman, memorizing U.S history, and trying to get used to our not so advaned technology like a DVD player.
The she goes through her"I'm going to make Travis my replacement best friend" stage trying to fill Laila's presence as she is in the Compound. Travis was so ordinary. It was freaky. But then stuff happens and its just WAY bigger than that. Plus Travis is the BEST!! And yes I do totally approve of Addie and Travis especially as their friendship blooms and progresses. They're both equally funny and they understand each other so so well!
______________________________________________________________________________
The thing about Pivot Point though is that it's just s much more complicated than just Addie choosing the life with the guy she likes more. Kasie West did an extremely brilliant job interconnecting both stories that you know when something happened in the other world that you read about. I LOVE the way this story was written and it's super cute and hugable! Kasie would you pleaaase let me read book 2? *flutters eyelashes* pretty please? *tries not to beg*
Pivot Point is a book you don't want to miss out on. perfect for sci-fi lovers that may also categorize into mystery, parnormal-ness written with a hint of contemporary. It's a book for ALL YA readers, one that all would fall in love with!

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this nearly as much as I did. I thought it was going to be a much lighter book focusing on Addie having to choose which parent to go with based on which guy she wanted to be with, but I was surprised at the slightly more sinister plots running beneath that story and how they all came together in the end. I think this works perfectly as a stand-alone novel, I'm not sure I'll want to read any other books in the series that come out. I definitely enjoyed this, though.
X-Men like super powers? A secret community? Why, hello there little novel! I’m mostly not into super natural-themed books (angels, witches, vamps? Hm, not often! Unless it’s on TV and we’re talking about Damon, Katherine or Caroline). But give me an X-Men / super hero-type lead character and I’m your man. Woman. Person.

Addie Coleman lives in The Compound with her parents and the other … well, ‘super naturals’ I guess. Everyone in The Compound possess some kind of advanced mental ability (telekinesis, lie detecting, ability to modify memories etc). Addie is a Searcher: when faced with a choice, she’s able to see the path each decision will take her down. When her parents get divorced, she has to choose between staying with her mother in The Compound or venturing out into the ‘real’ world with her father and living with the Norms (us regular folk). As she looks down each path she is faced with love, betrayal and the hardest choices of all – what (and who) can she live with … and without.
The chapters alternate between realities, but I never felt confused or thrown off. It was pretty easy to remember which reality I was going into whenever I picked up the book or moved between chapters. I love me some mental powers (I mean, who wouldn’t want to be X-Meny?!). Plus, with two paths there’s a double dose of love interest drama (yum!).
I picked up on a few of the plot twists early on, so there was less suspense than I’d hoped for, but I was thrown by one of them. Mostly, I was sad at how it ended – I want more. Which I think is a good feeling to have at the end of a book – to like it so much that there just weren’t enough pages in the story. So I’m pretty excited that there’s a second book due in 2014, Split Second. I hope it will explore The Compound and that reality more. I already live in the ‘Norm world’, give me my fantasy life!

Going into Pivot Point I was positive that no author could pull off such a complicated story line. I mean sure, I've read books with alternate universes (Unraveling) even watched T.V. shows (Fringe) and yet I've never read anything like this book! This isn't alternate universes....this is POSSIBILITIES!!
MY THOUGHTS
I can't even.....This book....
You know that feeling when you are blown away, stunned by something completely and irrefutably amazing?
There are two words that can name that feeling.
PIVOT POINT
So what is Pivot Point exactly. Well mind blowingly stupendous are a couple that could be an apt description, but that is probably not what you want to hear.
So Pivot Point, to start off relatively simple, is well written. (Obviously or no one would want to read or love it) but still, Pivot Point goes beyond what good writing is. Why would I say that, well not only is the writing style phenomenal, the way the author wrote it, keeping each scenario clear from the other is what really knocked my socks off.
Addie is looking into the future, deciding a fate that very well may change her life. Each scenario is similar, different characters, but the same mysteries. This could have easily confused me. (Trust me when I say that it's really not hard to send my head spinning...) But the author handled it perfectly. Each of Addie's POV where clear within the first page of the chapter. There was also a pattern and it sure wasn't erratic! (Again that is always a good thing!) Moving past the magnificent POV and writing style, there is Addie.
Oh Addie, how I loved you. Addie is a strong character and she is DETERMINED to find out the truth. Her gift in the long run can definitely help her, but in the short run causes her a whole bunch of pain. Still she remained strong throughout the entire book.
My one complaint about Addie is that in the scenario she stayed with her mom, she was so focused on teenage rebellion. I get that. But she was basing all of this one things from books she has read. (She is a major reader. YAY!!!) She didn't even seem that into the teenage rebellion....
So it's a love triangle..... but even the love triangle makes sense, because now, not only is Addie picking whether she wants to move with her dad or stay with her mom, she is also picking between two guys.... Although there are to potential guys there is obviously only one that she will ever end up picking.... (Trevor, Duke is a jerk...)
I loved being able to view both scenarios as the big WHAT IF? Constantly you're trying to figure out which life she'll choose, which was really fun!
So about Addie's friend Laila..... I liked her...most of the time.... but she came off as a bit of, how do I put this, an idiot..... She was always trusting the wrong people and pushing Addie towards the wrong people. And sometimes she didn't feel very sympathetic to what Addie had to go through with her gift. I'm not saying that she wasn't a good friend, because she was...I just at times didn't like her....
So I also loved watching Addie adjust to the "Norm" life. She was such a funny and clueless character when it came to simple things like the DVD player.
And, I can't believe this happened, but I almost forgot to mention Rowan! I loved his and Laila's interaction, but I also love him as a character! He was super funny and a great supporting character!
OVERALL
I really loved this book! Not only was it extremely well written it was super fun to read! Addie was a great character as were the other characters! I was definitely surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! I absolutely can't wait to read the next book! IT LOOKS FANTASTIC!!!
WOULD I READ THIS BOOK: YES!
WOULD I BUY THIS BOOK: YEP!
WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK: TO THOSE FAR AND WIDE!
WILL I READ THE NEXT BOOK: YES!!! SPLIT SECOND HERE I COME!!!
WILL I READ MORE BY THIS AUTHOR: YES! I also loved The Distance Between Us, which I read a few days before picking up Pivot Point!

This book is fantastic! Doing 2 timelines in one novel can be hard, but Kasie does a phenomenal job switching between them and weaves them together in this intriguing way.
Such an addictive read, I hope she writes more like this in the future.

I added this book to my TBR list just because the synopsis sounds interesting, I didn't realize it being categorize under Sci-Fi because if I've notice the word Sci-Fi, this book will NEVER end up on my TBR list unless someone recommends it or something. BUT BOOOOYYYYY.......was I wrong about it being Sci-Fi = bad story. I A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y love the book.
The story is actually about this girl, Addison (*or Addie*) lives in a community that's "advanced" mind-wise. She have this ability call Divergence but known to her friends as "Clairvoyance". She can Search to the future (*only her own future*) when she is presented by a choice and then choose which route she wants but she can't change her future, just the route. When Addison's parents is getting a divorce, she is given a choice whether she wants to live with her mom or her dad. Addison is thrown into dilemma so her best friend, Laila, convince Addison to use her ability to Search for the next 6 weeks to determine which is a better choice.
The story then continues with the chapters alternating between Para and Norm. Para, is how Addison's future would be if she chooses to live with her mom. While Norm, is how Addison's future would be if she chooses to live with her dad. It is amazing! I have never read a story like this before, normally its just alternated between the heroine and the hero, who would have thought to alternate between different futures.
On the other hand, I love Trevor. He so sweet, nice and SMART - he actually found out that the whole thing was a Search. If would have been up to me, I would have chosen the other path not the path chosen by Addie. Probably because the love for Trevor and also I would have done something to change the future even though its not really allowed (*laughs*). But the story ended well...so what the heck. I'm just confuse about the ending. Did Laila pass Addie the envelope? Will Addie get Trevor back? You know....with the whole different path taken going on. You never know if Trevor will feel the same way again....
Definitely worth my time to read this book. ANNNNDDDDD........if you hate Sci-Fi, forget about the hate, close your eyes to the part where they categorize it under Sci-Fi and START reading this book. Its GOOD...wait no....AMAZING....wait no, let see....SPECTACULAR! (*or AWESOME would to the job well too*)
P.S. I wonder what's the next book is about? Will the story continue? That would be cool.....

Spoiler
Can I just say I HATE Duke....? I know he is up to something, so I was expecting the "using-Addie's-ability" part but the reason why I really hate him was the part where he is caught two timing with Laila. Wow what an amazing debut! It was not that heavy until it needed to be, I had no idea who the villain was (more like there was more than just one or even two!), and it was also funny. Addie was an amazing character. Full review to come.
I really enjoyed this book. I do wish the author had spent more time on the mystery aspect instead of the romance. The romance in this book is heavy so if that's not what your looking for you might not like it as much. But, the world in which Kasie West create was pretty cool and kind of reminded me of Firelight a bit. I'm really excited for the second book!
4.5 stars
I love Kasie West! I definitely think her romance writing has improved since this one though. Usually, I can't put her books down, and I read them in a day or two. This one took a bit longer.
\ \ \ Proceed with caution!!! I have a really big mouth (not really, just when it comes to fiction) And I have been known to spoil things without knowing it!!!! / / /
Plot - The plot is fascinating!! We start in a compound for people with mental abilities/superpowers, and the book takes place across the span of two different choices Addie will face. The chapters alternate between Addie choosing to stay in the compound with her mom and Addie choosing to leave for Texas with her dad.
Addie - She is basically me: introverted, prefers real books to e-books (ironically I had to read this on my phone) and she can be comfortable with quiet. She is so selfless with her decision at the end!!
The other people in the love triangle - Trevor <3 / Duke :p All the Trevors I've known have been super nice, kinda quiet, and totally shippable, ^^this guy was no different. I LOVED him!! Duke just felt so unreal compared to him.
Content - In one of the glimpses of Addie's future, she experiences sexual assault by one of the guys at her school, and she avoids him and that future, but the vision of it is still very real for her. There is a drug dealer who is a real creep. And in the last chapter or so, there is a fight among characters that was a bit violent
Overall - I recommend if you love Kasie West, or superpowers/humans with 'gifts', or not-quite-normal worlds.
I'm so ready for Split Second! If only my library had it ._.
