4.06 AVERAGE

(This review is based on an advanced reader's copy.)

For how completely tame this book is about sex (I realized I was talking about kissing and started blushing!) and swears (He said 'freaking'; I had never seen him so mad), and how fluffy the first few hundred pages of high schoolers talking about football were, that was a pretty sad/terror-fuel ending.

So this book was ok and I think it achieved everything it set out to do, even if some of it is silly. The tech in the para world didn't seem to make a lot of sense - for hardcore scifi/fantasy fans this book is not. Decent twists and good romance, after things got going. I thought I would be here on goodreads letting people know it was good for younger audiences based on aforementioned tameness, but the legitimately scary and sad ending to each timeline makes it a strange and difficult book to recommend.

For all those who wonder "What if?" you should read this.

I can honestly say I enjoyed this book, but the writing style felt a little infantile and repetitive. was gonna give it 3.5 stars, but the major plot twist (I audibly gasped) bumped it up!! definitely gotta read the sequel now

This book was different from most that I've read, especially in the alternating chapters/alternating timelines format. It was a bit confusing at times, and at other times I wanted to hurry back to the other search option but otherwise it was a good read.

I'm blown away. This has to be one of the most unique, thrilling, and heartwrenching YA books I've read. I was not ready for the amount of emotion contained. The premise is simple, and seems pretty low-stakes: Addie lives in a compound full of people with abilities, psychologically enhanced abilities obtained genetically and trained throughout their lives. When Addie's parents get divorced, Addie searches the future to see whether she should live with her mom or her dad. What starts out as a typical high school life with her dad, and a continuation of her (para)normal life with her mom, turns into a heartbreaking decision. The book follows Addie's separate lives, living out both of her Searches into the future, but I surprisingly never got confused about which plot we were currently in. I don't want to spoil anything, but Addie has to make an impossible choice and my heart was simultaneously racing and sinking in the last few chapters as it became clear what her choice had to be. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Pivot Point is one of those understated books that deserves more popularity. Although the protagonist Addie has superpowers, as well as the rest of the people in her community, the novel reads more like a contemporary. Nonetheless, the two futures intertwine in intricate ways, and I enjoyed the mystery subplot. Honestly, I think the romance could have been shoved into the background a bit more, because what I wanted was more world building of Addie's supernatural world. But two things have been bothering me:
Spoiler1) How does Laila's power work? If she erases memories, doesn't she need to be able to see EXACTLY what memories she's erasing? Otherwise, how will she know which ones to erase? So how is she not aware of anything that happens in the two futures that Addie searches? and 2) If Duke's actually a Mood Controller, not a Telekinetic, wouldn't somebody at school have noticed? It's in his student record, isn't it? Unless his parents and teachers and principal all pretend otherwise, or they ignore it because he's so good at football, or Ray just happens to be with him 24/7?

“Sometimes perfection reveals the lie, not the truth.”

Addison is a Searcher, she is able to see all the alternate paths when she has to make a decision. Basically, she's able to see, and live through, all the ways a certain choice will change her future and where that decison would lead.
This story is set in a modern day world, where a secret society of Paranormals with special mind abilities lives in a technologically advanced Compound, only rarely mixing with the Norms - the ordinary people not able to use any mind abilities.

“Doesn't help to waste my time thinking about would've-beens."
Laila whispers, "He says to the girl with a mind full of them.”

When Addison's parents tell her they are planning to divorce, she has to make a decision. Her father, whom she loves most, is leaving the Compound to live among the Norms, while her distanced mother is staing. Addison decides to Search in her mind both alternate paths.
Should she stay with her mother, friends, people with whom she's alike and with everyhing she has known, or leave her old life behind for the sake of being with the person she loves most and an unexplored future? Which path will Addison take? When a strange deaths of young teenagers strat to occure in the Para world, everything gets much more complicated.

This book is basically mix of contemporary and science fiction, which sounds maybe a bit contradictory but does actually works out here. It was very light on the sci-fi elements though.

Pivot Point, while having many flaws, is such a page turner. The beggining is a bit generic, but after a while, the plot grippes you and makes sure you start questioning everything and whon't stop thinking about this book and all the possibe outcomes. I had also many problems with this book - the eye-roll-worthy tropes, my lack of deeper connection to the characters and their relationships, some generic parts of the story and Duke. Also, I think that the potential for this story was great and it could've been written and constructed in a better way.

“I don't care when people think I'm an antisocial, controlling bookworm because that's what I am. It's when they interpret me wrong that I have a problem.”

Pros:

* The idea of this story

* Unputdownable

* The second half of this book improves tremendously

* Great twists, not really shocking and some of them predictable, but revelations had an effect nonetheless

* Trevor

“When I read, I feel emotion all on my own. Emotion no living person is making me feel.”

Cons:

* Eye-roll-wothy tropes everywhere

* Lots of generic filler in the story

* Duke

* Certain lack of depth of the characters

* Way too much centerd on the two romances (not a love-triangle in this case though). Would've liked this story more if it was centered on other things as much as on the romances, as it was for the most part

* Overall, I expected more from this

“My bookcase is all yours.”
“I've just decided that those are my favorite five words in the world.”

After reading:

Could not put this one down. This is the second Kasie West book in a row which I couldn't stop reading, honestly. I did expect a bit more from this - the idea of this story had tremendous potential. It was really tropey, but I also really liked the second part and some other things. RTC

This is very YA so the characters were a little cringe worthy sometimes. I love Sliding Doors and so also loved the idea of this book.

4.5 stars

I really loved this story. It is so awesome that we kind of got two stories in one book. The two stories also seemed to parallel each other, like she was living alternate realities. Kasie West also does her chapter headers with definitions and it gives you an indication of which world you’re about to read, “Para” or “Norm”. I love Kasie West’s writing style, I tabbed so many quotes and scenes throughout my reading progress.

I really love how the main character is a book lover, but of course I am biased ;) I liked the concept of a hidden society of people with mind super powers living within the normal world. I wonder what super power I would want, Addie's ability to Search is pretty cool but making certain decisions must be tough :(

At the end I was like holy crap how is this girl gonna make her decision!! Ahh I can't wait to read the sequel because that ending!

Oh my God. WHY WHY WHY WHY!!!!! Why not Trevor? I love Trevor. Trevor is so freaking amazing I just want to scream!
I can understand why she chose whatever path she chose, best friends are better when they're still alive. But, ugh, Trevor with his beautiful long lashes and talent and Texas-ness...sigh...is perfect for Addie. And Trevor's ex can go die in a hole, and so can everyone else who's super annoying (Duke, Bobby, Poison, etc.)
Pivot Point is one of a kind and wonderful. It weaves two distinct futures expertly and it's just great.
