Book not as good as the movie alert. :(

It feels like it takes FOREVER for Joe Buck to get to New York in this -- more than half -- and even longer to meet Rico. Since their friendship (or, *ahem*) is the emotional core of the story, with less time spent on this, the impact is lost.

Wild to think about the cultural atmosphere that would lead to this being made into a hit movie.

After watching the movie a few weeks ago and really enjoying that I decided to check out the book it was based on and I was not disappointed. I liked the more extensive look at Joe’s childhood and backstory compared to the brief and trippy flashback sequences from the movie it really makes you understand why he is the way he is. I think I liked this just as much as the movie and think both mediums have their strengths that make the story great and equally heartbreaking.

I saw a clip from the movie version on a YouTube video, the hilarious scene where Dustin Hoffman bangs the hood of a taxi, “Hey! I’m walk-in’ he-ah!” So I downloaded the book and read it in three days. This is a beautiful story, but heartbreaking. The writer has some simple passages that reveal so much. Very well-written.

My wife and I watched the movie last night. Books are always better than movies, but this movie was done so well, through the acting and the video montages. I enjoyed both the book and movie.

The most moving, sensitive novel I’ve read in a long while. So much more profound than the film. This one is going on my Six Star shelf.

I was pretty surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Admittedly I knew the plot of the movie before I read it, so in some respects it was kinda like reading along to a story I already knew. There are some key differences between the book and movie, so it is worth it to check out the book. There’s real heart and emotion in the book. The characters don’t feel flat or one dimensional and the story comes to life with ease. There are some problematic bits, but it is very true to its time.
