2020 re-read: Wow it was like time traveling back to the 90s/2000s. The audiobook narrated by Anne Hathaway was really fun to listen to.

The Princess Diaries were my favourite book series growing up and re-reading the first book 10 years later didn't disappoint. The writing style makes it a quick and enjoyable read and although Mia and the supporting characters aren't always likeable, it's still incredibly entertaining. For a book from the 2000s, it has aged pretty well and I was a little surprised by the mature themes touched on here and there that I perceived very differently as a tween.

I'll explain, i don't think at my current age i would give a four star rating to the princess diaries books, but for the age group that they are aimed at, they are good. The day to day dramas and troubles of a socially awkward american teenage girl are portrayed very well, and the additional layer of her discovering that she is actually a royal just adds to the heights of the drama and the amusement of the funny parts.

It was an entertaining and fun read that I think I would have appreciated more if I read it as a teen. I think its different from the movie so if that's your expectation maybe it won't be for you. Nevertheless its funny and was an interesting insight into all the things teenagers might be thinking about.
SpoilerThough maybe not all of them think about being the princess of Genovia but still
