Loved the first 4/5 of the book, got some really interesting new ideas about Japanese and Chinese art and aesthetics - and then there was a sudden detour into misogyny and racism right at the end? Ugh.

A lovely reflection/eulogy on the role of shadows in traditional Japanese aesthetics. A small warning; there is a diversion into a description of woman’s beauty and the beauty of skin color which presents some misogynistic and racist ideas.

It's a very beautiful piece. I often found myself envisioning what was being talked about. Also it's always nice to read about a culture from someone in that culture. Not Japaneese in general, but Japaneese specifically when this book was written. This was written, what? In the 30s, so pre-WWII. It's interesting to get that perspective.
