a lot of people have criticized this poem through history and said essentially “this is the worst thing ever.” I am among those people.
Just gonna leave my favourite quotes here but everyone go and read this masterpiece x
Freely they stood who stood, and fell who fell.
Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven
Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss.
Me miserable! Which way shall I fly
Infinite wrath and infinite despair?
Which way I fly is hell; myself am hell;
And in the lowest deep a lower deep,
Still threat'ning to devour me, opens wide,
To which the hell I suffer seems a heaven.
However, I with thee have fixed my lot,
Certain to undergo like doom; if death
Consort with thee, death is to me as life;
O sun, to tell thee how I hate thy beams
That bring to my remembrance from what state I fell, how glorious once above thy sphere.
To be no more. Sad cure! For who would lose,
Though full of pain, this intellectual being,
Those thoughts that wander through eternity,
To perish, rather, swallowed up and lost
In the wide womb of uncreated night
Devoid of sense and motion?
Freely they stood who stood, and fell who fell.

This book should come with a warning or risk disclosure as the story of Adam and Eve is very familiar to almost everyone.
I was familiar with both the Quran and the Genesis story on the Fall. However, I was a bit unprepared for Milton's work as it brought a strange revelation to my understanding of the text. It took me some time to finish this book, and it was very rewarding towards the end (Book 12). I was chewing on the lines ever slowly to understand Milton's views, because there were many contradicting lines that will need extra brain power to interpret it how you'd think Milton will appreciate it.
p.s.: I'm just glad I didn't have to read this text when I was in school.

This is definitely a literary work that grows on you. To be honest, I didn't care for it the first time I read it. But, since I was reading it for school, I had to re-read it multiple times. Each time I read it I came up with more theories and analysis for what I believed Milton was trying to say about each of the characters.
I think the most interesting of all the characters is Satan. I could go into great detail over what I believe Milton's portrayal of him signifies, but the bottom line is that Paradise Lost is a piece that can be enjoyed by the religious and pagan alike.
Great story that opens up a lot of discussions!

This was an extremely hefty book considering it was the first epic poem I've tackled in my own time, but it was overall pretty enjoyable when I worked out what he was saying!
