I was not a fan of this book. I wish I could say I was, because I read None Shall Sleep last summer by the same author and loved it, but this just didn’t do it for me. It was slow, I didn’t really like or care for the characters. I really thought I would like this, the plot sounded interesting and it had potential, but just really fell flat.

Not to mention this took me five days to read. There was a few days where I didn’t really have time, but if I liked the book I would have made a effort to make time for it. But I didn’t, and now I’m behind on my Goodreads goal lol. Pretty disappointing, I wouldn’t recommend. 2 stars

very disappointed in this. harsh rating but I can't bear to even give this a 3 star. Ellie Marney has a great command of words, her world is so vibrant and despite historical war books not really being my thing I loved this setting and everything I learned from it.

And I can sit through anything for mystery - but this mystery had me BORED. I actually can't pinpoint why. It had The Alienist vibes which is one of my absolute favourite books and it still didn't save it. It also really struggled with correctly building things up. why am I bored for ages with not much happening and now we are kissing? what the heck??? sprinkle it throughout girl, give me crumbs or whatever! not nothing then BAM

the characters are flat, feel very similar and created from the same mould. I'm rating this so low because it had everything going for it and just failed so bad. Also my last read from the author was so good so I'm shocked on this one and it has me thinking I need to give None Shall Sleep a reread. (but I'm also scared to wreck it's good memory!)

4.2

suddenly reading a lot of historical fiction…this one from another favorite time period of mine: post WW2, specifically women who broke codes! i read a killer biography of elizabeth friedman and now it’s one of my favorite niche micro-periods in history. otherwise, 4.2 because i saw the killer coming the second he walked on page

I have been anxiously waiting for my library to purchase this book and it did not disappoint! I loved this WWII historical fiction about female code breakers. There is a F/F romance, murder, mystery and amateur sleuthing- all of which made for an amazing book. Can't wait to read more from this author.
